11 Tips I Wish I Knew Before Ruli Application

Restylane, a widely recognized brand of injectable fillers, is formulated with hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin. This component is instrumental in smoothing out fine lines and adding volume to various facial areas. The Restylane product line includes Restylane Silk for lip augmentation, mouth lines, and under-eye hollows; Restylane Lyft for cheek and hand enhancement; Restylane Defyne and Refyne for laugh lines and marionette lines; and the recently FDA-approved Restylane Kysse, specifically designed for lip enhancement. Given the extensive range of options, selecting the right Restylane product for your needs can be somewhat daunting. Here, we outline 11 insights from our Ruli community members, along with expert advice from two board-certified dermatologists, to help you make an informed decision before undergoing Restylane treatment.

1. What to Expect During a Restylane Treatment?

The experience of Restylane treatment varies—some may feel minimal discomfort, while others might only experience a brief pinch. “Restylane, like other dermal fillers, is generally painless, but I always provide my patients with numbing cream to apply an hour before the injections to reduce any discomfort,” explains Dr. Michele Green, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “The Restylane syringe itself contains lidocaine, which helps alleviate any pain. The procedure typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the treatment area and the number of syringes used.”

2. Where Can Restylane Be Injected?

Restylane can be injected into multiple facial areas. “Restylane is a highly versatile product and can be used in the lips, nasolabial region, cheeks, temples, neck lines, and for hand rejuvenation,” notes Dr. Green. Injecting Restylane under the eyes is also common, used to address volume loss in the tear trough area. “I prefer using Restylane because it causes minimal swelling post-injection, and the results are immediate,” says Dr. Green. Doctors may also use Restylane off-label for various purposes, which is generally considered safe when administered by an experienced, board-certified professional.

3. Potential Bruising and Swelling After Restylane Injections

Following your Restylane filler injection, you may experience bruising and swelling for a few days to two weeks. It’s advisable to plan accordingly and prepare for a short period of downtime. “Most of my patients experience very minimal swelling or bruising after Restylane,” says Dr. Green. “If you are prone to either, it’s best to avoid scheduling injections before any significant events or parties.”

4. Reducing Downtime After Restylane Treatment

Although post-treatment bruising and swelling are common, there are steps you can take to minimize downtime. “To reduce downtime after Restylane injections, avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, or Advil, as well as vitamins and fish oil, for at least a week before your injections,” advises Dr. Green. “Also, refrain from alcohol consumption a few days before the procedure. After the injections, avoid excessive exercise, steam rooms, or saunas for at least 48 hours to minimize swelling.”

For those prone to bruising, Dr. Sonia Badreshia, a board-certified dermatologist in Beverly Hills, California, recommends taking over-the-counter arnica or bromelain tablets or applying arnica cream to the treatment area to reduce downtime. “Drinking pineapple juice, which contains bromelain, can also help,” she suggests.

5. Patience is Key: Results Take Time

Initial bruising and swelling can make it difficult to assess the results immediately after a Restylane treatment. If you are less prone to bruising or swelling, you might see results quickly, but for those more reactive, it may take longer. “If there is any bruising or swelling, it can take up to 10 days to see the final results,” says Dr. Green.

6. Finding the Right Restylane Provider

Restylane is offered by many medical providers, but how do you choose the most suitable one? While Ruli community members emphasize the importance of the provider’s experience, Dr. Green suggests also reviewing their before-and-after Restylane photos. “You can search for ‘Restylane providers near me’ to find physicians in your city who offer Restylane and review the before-and-after photos on their website,” she advises. “You can also explore Ruli to see which physicians in your area have answered questions and posted Restylane before-and-after photos, showcasing both their expertise and results.”

7. Is Restylane Safe?

While bruising and swelling are common, other side effects might raise questions about Restylane’s safety. Common side effects include temporary swelling, discomfort, bleeding, and bruising. However, more serious risks like nodules or granulomas (though extremely rare) can occur, according to Dr. Badreshia. “Certain areas are at higher risk of vessel injection, which can lead to skin necrosis, so choosing an experienced provider is crucial,” she emphasizes.

8. Addressing Restylane Risks and How to Manage Them

In addition to bruising, you might experience swelling and lumps at the injection site. “Swelling will naturally subside over time, and applying ice packs can help resolve it more quickly,” says Dr. Green. “Lumps that cannot be massaged away require hyaluronidase injections for removal.” While most nodules will resolve on their own, if they persist and bother you, Dr. Badreshia recommends consulting your provider two weeks after your Restylane filler injection.

9. Dissolving Restylane: What to Do if You’re Unsatisfied with the Results

Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the skin. Over time, your body will break it down. However, if you are overinjected or the results are not as expected, your provider can use hyaluronidase, an enzyme that accelerates the breakdown of hyaluronic acid, to dissolve the filler. “Care must be taken to correct any misplaced filler,” cautions Dr. Green.

10. How Long Do Restylane Results Last?

The duration of Restylane results depends on the injection site and your individual metabolism. Some people’s bodies break down the filler more quickly than others, especially in areas with frequent muscle movement like the lips. “With comprehensive Restylane treatment, results can last up to 18 months in nasolabial folds, 10 to 12 months in the cheeks, six months on the back of the hands, and up to six months in facial wrinkles and folds with Restylane Lyft,” says Dr. Green. “Restylane Silk can last between three and six months for the lips and perioral rhytids, and up to 12 months in facial wrinkles and folds with Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne.”

11. Is Getting Restylane Worth It?

Restylane is a highly regarded injectable filler treatment with a Ruli Worth It Rating of 96%. To determine if Restylane is right for you, read reviews and consult with multiple providers to assess if you are a suitable candidate.
