The Evolving Essence of Beauty: Perspectives from Influential Women in 2024
Womanhood is inherently beautiful – a core theme of International Women’s Day, which is globally observed on March 8. As gender dynamics worldwide continue to evolve, and diversity and differences – in the stories we share and the bodies we admire – are celebrated, the concept of beauty expands.
To explore this evolving definition, we sought insights from 10 influential women on how they perceive contemporary beauty in 2024 and who they admire as beauty icons. Their responses highlight a common thread: beauty is deeply rooted in confidence, individuality, and the serene self-assurance of a woman comfortable in her own skin.
Leslie Harris, L’Oréal Executive
Defining Contemporary Beauty as the Global General Manager of SkinCeuticals
“Contemporary beauty is about understanding what you desire and the kind of beauty you aspire to in your life and in the mirror, never compromising. It’s about your personal vision of perfection, combined with self-compassion. And having radiant skin and lush eyelashes – those are certainly advantageous as well.”

“Dr. Shilu Shrestha, an orthopedic hand surgeon in Nepal. I first learned about Dr. Shilu Shrestha when SkinCeuticals partnered with ReSurge International to launch Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery, a program focused on leadership, mentorship, and surgical training for first-generation women reconstructive surgeons in developing countries. ReSurge International recognized her as a promising and talented young surgeon, and when I finally met her during a ReSurge International surgical training expedition in Dehradun, India, she surpassed all expectations!
For me, contemporary beauty is reflected in demeanor. Dr. Shrestha is powerful, confident, and aspirational, and she uses these qualities to improve the world. One of her most remarkable traits is that she could excel as a top physician anywhere – she has received international training and undoubtedly possesses the talent. However, she has chosen to stay in Nepal to help those most in need and ensure they have access to surgical care. Observing her perform complex reconstructive surgery during the training made me realize how vital it is for SkinCeuticals – and for me, as a woman – to do everything in our power to ensure women like Dr. Shrestha continue to thrive in their careers, providing life-changing surgical care to those whose lives literally depend on it.”

“I believe beauty should be defined by each individual. Today, globally, we recognize that fair skin is not superior to dark skin, tall is not better than short, and thin is not preferable to a healthy physique. These are merely relative and distinct, not superior! Beauty for me is in how you interact with people, regardless of their status or wealth, how respectful you are of others’ beliefs, how empathetic you are towards your fellow beings, and how gracefully you conduct your life. Women, you are beautiful, but you must first embrace yourself before others can see your beauty.”

“The person who most embodies contemporary beauty for me is my coach, Anna Maria. She is utterly graceful and beautiful. She is loving and powerful. She is emotional and balanced. She taught me that we don’t need to be or act like men to excel in our roles!”

Overall, for me, contemporary beauty is having this attitude – and then enhancing with makeup, hair color, etc., where feasible!”
