Until recently, discussions about sun protection, research into the harmful effects of the sun, and product formulation testing have largely overlooked BIPOC individuals. Consequently, it is understandable that many individuals with medium to dark complexions have historically avoided the chalky, white sunscreens that were prevalent on store shelves, mistakenly believing they were immune to sun damage. While it is true that melanin provides some natural protection against UV rays and sunburn, and skin cancer rates are lower among non-white populations, the prognosis for those diagnosed is often worse because the disease is frequently detected at a later stage.
This is why comprehensive sun protection education, starting from a young age, is crucial. It is also why all skincare companies need to start developing and marketing products that are effective and appealing to everyone, including people of color. The good news is that there are numerous chemical and physical sunscreens on the market that blend seamlessly into darker skin tones without leaving any noticeable residue, while still providing effective sun protection. We consulted with nine dermatologists of color to gather their recommendations.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 ($34)
“Do not underestimate the importance of sunscreen for dark skin. Supergoop is exceptional if you are open to chemical sunscreens. The brand offers multiple formulations that are not only transparent but also enhance the skin. The notion that sunscreen makes your face look pale or ashy is no longer valid.” – Dr. Michelle Henry, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City
SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 ($34)
“This is my top choice for sunscreen for medium to dark skin. It is a tinted mineral sunscreen that provides a matte finish with no white residue. As it relies on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, it is perfect for those with sensitive skin or who need protection from blue light. The liquid texture is easy to apply, and the universal tint offers a subtle concealing effect. It is lightweight for daily use and water-resistant for up to 40 minutes, making it ideal for beach outings.” – Dr. Aanand Geria, a board-certified dermatologist in Rutherford, New Jersey
ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Ultralight Tinted Mineral Sunscreen ($66)
“This product contains DNA repair enzymes to correct sun damage, antioxidants to combat environmental pollution, and zinc oxide, the leading sunblock ingredient. It blends seamlessly and disappears, even on dark skin, without leaving any residue.” – Dr. Peterson Pierre, a board-certified dermatologist in Thousand Oaks, California
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 ($36)
“This lotion is highly compatible with dark skin and is excellent for acne, rosacea, and both sensitive and oily skin due to its oil-free formula. It also includes beneficial ingredients like hydrating hyaluronic acid, exfoliating lactic acid, and niacinamide for antioxidant protection and enhanced hydration.” – Dr. Sapna Palep, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City
Dermablend Professional Cover Creme Titanium Dioxide Sunscreen SPF 30 ($39)
“Tinted sunscreen for dark skin is a challenge. I feel that we lack sufficient variety from medical brands to cater to all skin types, but I believe this is improving. Dermablend Professional is a brand that I think is making significant strides. It is more aware of offering multiple tones that protect against visible light.” – Dr. DiAnne Davis, a board-certified dermatologist in Houston
Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen ($30)
“This is an excellent, moisturizing mineral sunscreen option for dark skin. Although it is white, it blends easily and completely into a sheer finish, leaving the skin dewy and hydrated without any white cast.” – Dr. Sejal Shah, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City

Replenix UltiMatte Perfection SPF 50 ($44.50)
“I am a fan of mineral-based or physical sunscreens, especially for dark skin, due to the conditions I see, such as hyperpigmentation, melasma, and acne. Mineral sunscreens are an effective treatment and prevention strategy. Medical-grade SPF contains micronized zinc oxide, which is more sheer and transparent, preventing the skin from looking white, chalky, or ashy. I particularly like Replenix BB cream and Colorescience brush-on powder for all skin types. The BB cream includes antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E, and I appreciate its multifunctional nature—it serves as a sunscreen, moisturizer, and primer. Colorescience also aids in SPF and shine control.” – Dr. Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, a board-certified dermatologist in Danville, California
Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 ($18.99)
“I recommend Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer because it provides broad-spectrum SPF 30 and has a cosmetically elegant appearance on all skin types.” – Dr. Dina Strachan, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City
SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair Broad-Spectrum SPF 34 Sunscreen ($68)
“My favorite facial sunscreen is SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair. It offers SPF 34 that blocks UVA, UVB, and infrared radiation. It blends smoothly into my brown skin without being chalky, and it is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and does not clog pores or cause breakouts. I suffer from melasma, and the fact that this product blocks heat and three different parts of the sun's spectrum is fantastic.” – Dr. Jeanine Downie, a board-certified dermatologist in Montclair, New Jersey
